You're the glue that holds Montana's public schools together!
Working for Montana's children
If you're like most classified school employees, you love children and you want to make a positive difference in their lives.
MEA-MFT cares about children too. We are proud of our reputation as Montana's leading champion for children, public schools, and school employees.
MEA-MFT is also proud to have over 2,000 classified public employees as members. Our classified members include school bus drivers, teacher and playground aides, secretaries, custodians, maintenance people, computer technicians, food service and health care personnel, and paraprofessionals.
Classified members join with Montana teachers, higher education faculty, public employees, health care workers, and Head Start teachers to form MEA-MFT. With 16,000 members all together, we have the clout to make a powerful difference for our members and the people they serve.
You're an important part of the team! As members of MEA-MFT, classified school employees are full partners with teachers, higher education faculty, and other MEA-MFT members. Classified members can run for any MEA-MFT office - local, state, or national. You're an important part of the MEA-MFT team.

- Protecting you, your job, your family
Professional development: helping you succeed in your career: MEA-MFT provides many opportunities for classified members to learn and grow - both in your job and your personal life. Members attend these events free as part of their membership. We offer conferences and workshops designed especially for classified employees, with topics such as time management, assertiveness, professional image, interview skills and resume writing, workplace safety, student discipline, working with medically fragile children, stress management, and much more.
Hundreds of classified members attended MEA-MFT's 2000 Classified & Public Employee Conference, returning to work with new knowledge and enthusiasm. Classified members also attend MEA-MFT's Summer Conference each year, where they learn leadership and professional skills along with teachers and other MEA-MFT members.
In addition, hundreds of classified members attended workshops on almost any topic they need right at their work site -- provided by MEA-MFT field staff.
Better salaries and working conditions: MEA-MFT works year-round to help our local classified employee affiliates negotiate better salaries and working conditions for local MEA-MFT members.
MEA-MFT won a much-needed increase in state funding for public schools in the 1999 Legislature. This money will help save important school programs from the chopping block and help our members negotiate for better salaries and benefits. MEA-MFT will continue to fight for adequate school funding in the 2001 Legislature.
Improving your retirement: In a major victory for classified members, MEA-MFT won a cost of living increase (Guaranteed Annual Benefit Adjustment) for retirees in the Public Employee Retirement System during the 1997 Legislature. This will help our classified members in their retirement years.
Protecting you, your job, your family: Every year, MEA-MFT's highly skilled staff help classified members resolve all kinds of work-related issues, from protecting your rights to safeguarding your health benefits. MEA-MFT staff are only a phone call away, and their help is free to MEA-MFT members. Click here to contact MEA-MFT staff members. (LINK to contact page)
MEA-MFT protects you and your job in several ways. Our staff works with local members and affiliates to negotiate good contracts; enforce existing contracts; and improve your salary, benefits, and working conditions.
MEA-MFT's special member benefits programs offer low-cost, high-quality insurance to help you project yourself, your family, home, and valuables. Click here to learn more about member benefits. (LINK)
Your voice in issues that affect you: Politicians can decide your salary, vacation and sick leave, whether school food programs continue to exist, and every other aspect of your job. MEA-MFT stays involved in the political process to give you a strong voice in issues that affect you.
MEA-MFT works closely with elected officials whose decisions impact you and your job. We help elect friends of children and public schools. We fight for policies that support education and public school employees.
From the local school board, to the state legislature, to the governor's office, MEA-MFT speaks out for classified school employees. For example, we continue to fight for unemployment compensation for classified employees during summer layoffs.
Special benefits: members only
We know public school employees live on tight budgets. That's why MEA-MFT works with NEA and AFT to find special discounts for members. These services save members hundreds of dollars on home financing; no-fee, low-rate credit cards; financial planning assistance; low-cost car and home insurance; and much more.
