Public Employees:
Proud to work for Montanans

If you're like most public employees, you're proud to work for the people of Montana, and you care about the work you do.

MEA-MFT cares about public services too. We believe they are essential to Montana's success, now and in the future. We are proud of our reputation as Montana's leading advocate for quality public services, public schools, and public employees.

MEA-MFT has over 2,500 public employees as members including state, county, and municipal employees; health care personnel; and Head Start employees. Our public employee members range from county assessors to chemical dependency counselors, from state wildlife biologists to correctional officers, from chemists to licensed practical nurses.

These public employee members join with public school employees and higher education faculty to form MEA-MFT. With 16,000 members in all, we are the largest and most effective employee organization in Montana.

What has MEA-MFT done for public employees lately?

See some of our most recent accomplishments for public employee members in:
  • Professional development
  • Better salaries & working conditions
  • Protecting you, your job, your family
  • Better labor-management relations
  • Better retirement
  • Your voice in issues that affect you
  • Building support for public employees
  • Keeping public services public
Professional development: In 2000 alone, hundreds of public employee members attended MEA-MFT's top-quality conferences and workshops, gaining new skills and knowledge to help them in their jobs and their lives.

MEA-MFT offers many conferences and workshops designed especially for public employees. They deal with topics such as communication skills, dealing with workplace conflict, interview skills, time management, workplace safety, stress management, and more. We also offer leadership training in areas such as labor-management relations, grievance processing and contract negotiation.

These events, both state and local, are free as part of your membership.

Better salaries & working conditions: MEA-MFT won a significant pay raise for state employees in the 1999 Legislature. Because of our successful pre-budget negotiations with the state in 2000, we are in good position once again to gain a salary and benefit increase in the 2001 Legislature.

Also in 2000, MEA-MFT won major victories for wildlife biologists, appraisers, correctional officers, drug counselors, Silver Bow County librarians, and Tri County Head Start.

MEA-MFT works year-round to improve benefits for public employees and make their salaries more competitive. Our aim is to help all our members achieve a contract that honors the valuable work they do.

Protecting you, your job, your family: Every year, our highly skilled staff help members resolve all kinds of work-related issues, from protecting your rights to safeguarding your health benefits. MEA-MFT staff are only a phone call away, and their help is free to MEA-MFT members. MEA-MFT's public employee field consultants are Inga Nelson and Todd Lovshin. Click here to contact them. In addition, MEA-MFT's special member benefits programs offer low-cost, high-quality insurance to help you protect yourself, your family, home, and valuables. Check out our member benefits to see how they can help you. for Member Benefits and AFT Plus information.

Better labor-management relations: MEA-MFT has trained many of our members to use a new, more amicable way of solving problems with management: labor-management committees. The process has helped our members achieve better relations with management and better policies in areas such as comp time, flexible work hours, and performance evaluations.

Better retirement: MEA-MFT won a much-needed cost of living increase (Guaranteed Annual Benefit Adjustment) for retirees in the Public Employee Retirement System and Teachers Retirement System in the 1997 and 1999 legislative sessions. This will help our public employee members enjoy their retirement years.

Your voice in issues that affect you: Politicians affect every aspect of your job as a public employee. MEA-MFT keeps track of legislative bills and other political decisions to make sure your concerns are represented.

Building public support for our members: Through projects such as the Quality Services From Quality People Campaign, MEA-MFT lets the rest of Montana know how public employees contribute to Montana's economy and communities. It's all part of our effort to build support for our members and the valuable work you do.

Keeping public services public: Efforts to privatize public services have had disastrous results - both for the people who provide those services and the people who receive them. MEA-MFT has successfully fought numerous attempts to privatize public services in Montana. We'll continue working to keep public services public.
