SUPREME COURT RULES ON HARASSMENT: IS YOUR DISTRICT READY?
The Supreme Court ruled May 23 that school districts can be held liable for failing to stop sexual harassment by students. Does your district know how to effectively handle students who harass? "School districts should take prompt and effective action to stop known instances of peer sexual harassment," said NEA President Bob Chase in a statement hailing the high court's decision. (http://www.nea.org/nr/st990524.html) Through events, training, and professional development books, NEA is helping educators reduce and prevent student sexual harassment. NEA's pamphlet, "Stop Student Sexual Harassment Now" (http://www.nea.org/society/sexharas.html), offers practical advice on how to recognize student sexual harassment and what to do to stop it. The NEA Professional Library offers a number of books -- including "Flirting or Hurting?" -- full of proven strategies for dealing with harmful behavior.

METLIFE SURVEY OFFERS TEACHERS' VIEWS ON SCHOOL SAFETY
In a just released survey on school safety, Metropolitan Life finds teachers and schools using a range of creative solutions to help communities prevent youth violence. The survey -- "Violence in America's Public Schools, Five Years Later" -- compares the results of a similar MetLife survey taken in 1993. The poll was completed prior to the recent school shootings in Colorado and Georgia. NEA President Bob Chase expressed hope that the nationwide findings will lead to "ever-greater support for school-based, family-based, and community-based solutions" that enhance school safety.
